Health & P.E Week (Staff vs Student netball game)

As another Health & P.E week wraps up, it’s time to reflect on some of this week’s events. I gave the students the opportunity to have full use of the gym and the storeroom equipment on Monday,  Miss Wencel held dance club on Tuesday,  we had rope skipping on Wednesday,  Mr Bell and Miss Preaudet helped coordinate the ride to school day on the Thursday and the grade 3-6’s enjoyed the Coach Approach program on Friday. The highlight for me throughout the week was without doubt the annual Staff vs Students Netball game on Thursday.

Last year the Students gave us teachers a lesson in what young Athletic children can do when they are really determined. Fast forward a year and we were ready and prepared (after a long pre- season) to reclaim the title of best netball team in the school. I put together an elite team of teachers that were prepared to do anything to win…..I named us Dream Team Mark 1!

After an enthralling match where the score chopped and changed the game came down to the final seconds. With a draw looming and a possible rematch next week (some the older teachers wouldn’t have been able to handle that), the teachers worked the ball from defence to attack and put the last ball in the net (seconds before the whistle) to win back the title that is rightfully ours. The students were gallant in defeat and showed all of the values that make our school what it is today-persistence, sportsmanship and commitment but unfortunately they just missed out this year.  Now the students will have to wait for another year for their revenge……..but we will be ready!!!!!

House Athleitics Parent Helpers

Thank you to all the parents who have offered to assist us with the House Athletic Sports Day. Ive sent home a roster to all the parents that will be helping on the day. If you haven’t received one at this stage, it means we have enough helpers-thanks all the same.

I will need some assistance with putting hurdles up and down during the day and recording times during the track events (particularly the finals). I might call on you at some stage!  Otherwise I’m hoping to see you all there.

Regards,

Michael Goodyear

Bendigo Cross Country Division Finals

Yesterday a group of our students participated in the Division Finals in Bendigo. Over 3000 students represented a number of schools across
the Bendigo, Macedon Ranges, Echuca and Swan Hill Regions. Congratulations to all of our students who represented our school and district with distinction.

The results for each individual runner are as followed; Georgia 3B ran 14th in her age group, Nathaniel 4B (8th), Jack O 5B (12th), Callum Gundy was injured during the run, however still managed to finish the race 102nd, Jessica 5B (25th), Nathan 6A (9th), Patrick 6A (8th) and Livi 6B (79th).

It’s extremely pleasing to announce that Nathaniel, Nathan and Patrick have all made it through to the next level for finishing in the first ten places for their age group. Congratulations on your amazing efforts and good luck at the next stage.

Cross Country

Well done to all of the students who represented the school
at the District Cross Country yesterday. The students ran extremely well in
what could only be described as perfect running weather. Making this team was an
achievement of its own, particularly with all the incredible runners we have in
our school. We had 12 runners who placed in the top ten positions across the
age groups. Congratulations to Nathan, Livi, Callum, Nathaniel, Jack, Jessica
and Georgia for placing in the top six positions for their age groups and as a
result will represent our school at the Division Championships on Wednesday, 23rd
of May in Bendigo.

Thank you to Anne, Trent and Mrs Miller who were fantastic help on the day. I also appreciate all
the parents who came out to support our team. A very big thank you to Sue
Corbell (again) who offered to wash all of the cross country singlets-thanks
Sue!

Goal Posts

You may have (or may not have) noticed a brand new addition
to the school’s oval this week….new goal posts! Thanks to the hard working
Parents Association and the generosity of our school community we were able to purchase
brand new goal posts for our school. Hopefully the students will get many years
of great use of this new piece of equipment.

Winter Sports

Some of the grade 5/6
students have begun the process of trying out for the Football and Netball
teams. This includes a couple of weeks of trial matches that will determine the
make-up of all our teams. Part of the football trial process will include full
match practice. If the boys and girls want to bring their mouthguards to school
(particularly on Mondays) they are more than welcome to. It is not compulsory.  Good luck to all involved!

Jump Rope For Heart

Congratulations to the New Gisborne Primary School community
for their outstanding contribution to the Heart Foundation. At Friday’s
assembly we were presented with a certificate of recognition and appreciation
from the Heart Foundation for being the highest fundraising school in the
Loddon Mallee region. This includes 56 schools, some of which have a much
larger student population than our own. It’s also worth mentioning that we were
the 8th highest fundraising school out of a total of 487 schools
that participated in the program in Victoria last year. All credit needs to go
to the students and parents who supported the program, particularly those who made
a contribution through their fundraising efforts. A special mention needs to go
to Charlotte Watson who was also presented with a certificate of appreciation
for being the highest fundraiser for our school-Well done Charlotte!

We’ve set a high standard for next term, however considering
under half of our students raised the total amount last year I think we’re a
good chance of beating our record and contributing even more to a great cause.

Tennis Squad

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the
trials to make the district tennis squad this term. A special mention to Austin
(6B), Nick (6B), Harry (6A), Livi (6B), Emily (5B) & Eloise (6A) for making
the final squad.

Premier’s Active Families Challenge

Here’s a great opportunity for the family to get involved in a bit
of fitness leading up to and on the holidays (especially after we eat a few too
many Easter eggs).

The Premier’s Active Family
challenge is a Government initiative aimed at getting as many Victorian school
students (and their families) involved in physical activity to promote and
encourage a healthy lifestyle. The Challenge encourages Victorians to do 30
minutes of physical activity for 30 days from 19 March to 30 April 2012. It’s
free, it’s fun and it’s easy.

All you need to do is register at www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/challenge
by following a few simple prompts (it doesn’t take long at all).

By simply registering you’ll receive:

  • an email confirming your registration details and what you need to
    do
  • a letter in the mail with your registration card.
  • This card entitles you to 20 free YMCA passes, 15% off at Rebel
Sport, one free child pass to the Melbourne Aquarium and one free child pass to
    the National Sports Museum.

You can register anytime from 20 February through to 1
April. Just remember, the Challenge starts on the 19 March, so the earlier you
register the more time you’ll have to do your 30 minutes of activity. There are
also exclusive prizes and offers up for grabs, so register now at
www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/challenge. The earlier you register the more
chances you’ll have to win.

After the Challenge has been completed, you’ll be asked to
complete a short survey. If you completed 30 minutes of physical activity in 30
days, you’ll receive a certificate in the mail.

Good luck!

Cross Country Reminder

Cross country is on next week Friday the 23rd. If
you haven’t put your name as a helper, please consider doing this. It is a very
easy job and we need 20 parents to cover all the checkpoints of the run.

Thanks,

Mr G

Swimming Sports 2012

Finally……..a post.

The District Swimming Event went swimmingly today….. I promise that will be the last lame joke……for now. On a serious note the New Gisborne students are to be commended for their efforts today. Although gold was a little too elusive today for the team, there were a number of students who placed either second or third. Beyond that the rest of our team can be extremely proud of the way they performed, their sportsmanship and incredible attitude. As I’ve mentioned to them on a number of occasions their achievements started when they had the courage to try out for the team and then eventually making the team, anything after that was a bonus. Well done kids I couldn’t be any prouder of you.

A special mention to Simon Matthews, Joanne De Ruiter, Karah Grieve, Selga Cirulis and Jenny Need who assisted me with marshalling and place giving duties. Thanks also to the other parents who supported or offered to help out on the day. A big thank you to Steve Nicol who was the official starter for the entire day. As I mentioned today Steve, you did such a good job that it’s yours for life. Last but not least thank you Mr Bell for assisting me with facilitating the trial days and your work today.

Tennis is only a couple of weeks away and our House Cross Country event is on Friday the 23rd of March (keep that day free if you can).
